What to Expect in a Class
Professor Grão tailors classes to suit all levels - from beginners to advanced. Spending more time on the basics with beginners, he insists that they still be exposed to advanced techniques, so that they can learn Capoeira and form a game around a broader knowledge. Classes begin with a brief warm up with some exercises like running to warm the body up, then stretching for 10-15 minutes to make sure all your muscle groups develop flexibility and prepare for the movements in class.

Beginners usually learn key movements like kicks and dodges first, then build on these movements to make sequences.

During classes conditioning exercises are taught to build strength and stamina – such as push ups, abdominal exercises and core strength training. At the end of class, we sometimes have a ‘roda’, music practice or quick chat about Capoeira history. The roda is where the game of Capoeira is played, and is integral to learning Capoeira. Anyone can jump in and it’s good to get over the nerves and know that everyone started by feeling awkward but they always had fun and got over their nerves by trying.

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE FIT AND FLEXIBLE TO DO CAPOEIRA. BY DOING CAPOEIRA YOU WILL GET FIT AND FLEXIBLE!
